For more than a decade, Fellowship Housing supporters have enjoyed an annual tradition: the Fellowship Golf Outing at Stonewall Orchards. Nestled in the middle of Lake County, this golf course not only provides a scenic spot to play a round of golf, but wonderful hospitality as we enjoy dinner, music, an auction, and an afternoon of fun–all to help single moms in our community.
“We’re kind of a hidden gem,” Jeff Pajula, head pro and general manager at Stonewall, says. “People don’t even know we’re here. But our customers really enjoy the course. It’s their home away from home.”
We chatted with Jeff recently about Stonewall and its ongoing partnership with Fellowship Housing. (By the way, you can still nab early bird pricing (a savings of $25 per person) for the golf outing here)
How long has Stonewall hosted the Fellowship Golf Outing?
“We’ve been hosting the Fellowship Golf Outing since 2005.”
What do you think is the secret to your successful partnership with Fellowship?
“Everyone on the Fellowship team is really organized, and we work well together with them. We’ve got a quality course, it’s a U.S. Open qualifier course, and a lot of good players who come out every year for the event.”
What makes Stonewall Orchard unique?
“We are one of the few privately owned public courses in the area. We’re not owned by a park district or municipality, or a developer or big conglomerate that runs 100 courses. It’s more family-owned by just a couple of owners. Also, because we are a privately owned course and not part of a housing development, there are no busy roads or homes right on the course.”
Tell us about the history of Stonewall Orchard. Was it ever an actual orchard?
“Yes, back in the day, part of the land was an apple orchard. And there was a farm called Stonewall Farm, so that’s how we got the name. Some of the original landowners are still owners of the course. We opened in July 1999 and have been growing ever since then.”
What do you enjoy most about working with Fellowship’s golf outing?
“The whole team is pleasant, very organized, easy to work with. It makes it easy to give the golfers a fun, relaxing experience. We make sure the whole day goes smoothly, that everyone has a great time.”
